If you have some extra time, we highly recommend exploring Haenertsburg and Magoebaskloof. The area is rich in history, surrounded by beautiful forests, and offers plenty to see and do. From scenic hikes and waterfalls to charming village spots, it’s the perfect place to make a little getaway out of the wedding weekend.

Haenertsburg Town

Haenertsburg is a charming village town that feels like a step back in time. The town is rich in history and offers antique shops, cozy cafés, and breathtaking mountain views.

Tallest Planted tree in the world

South Africa now holds the records for the highest tree in Africa and the highest planted tree in the world. The saligna gum (Eucalyptus saligna) tree known as Fourth Kin in the Magoebaskloof state forest, measured at 83,7m and was planted by forestry pioneer AK Eastwood in 1906.

Long Tom View Site

The Long Tom View site is a picnic spot with a view of the Iron Crown mountain and surrounds where the Boer’s last Long Tom gun was blown up at the end of the Boer War.

A must-stop in the area, the Magoebaskloof Farmstall & Café is perfect for a relaxed break. You’ll find delicious homemade treats, fresh local produce, and a cozy café atmosphere—great for a quick coffee or light bite while exploring the area.

The Red Plate

Located in Haenertsburg town, The Red Plate is a local favorite for a tasty meal or casual lunch. Its central location makes it easy to walk around afterwards and explore some of the charming shops nearby, all while enjoying fresh, hearty dishes in a welcoming atmosphere.

Krabbefontein Coffee Shop

Set on a historic farm in Magoebaskloof, Krabbefontein Coffee Shop honors over a century of agricultural heritage. Originally part of an experimental research farm established in the early 1900s, the area later became known for citrus production under the Union of Krabs brand. Today, the coffee shop serves high-quality coffee and homemade treats in a charming countryside setting, letting visitors enjoy both the flavors and the rich history of the region.

ACTIVITIES

Wegraakbosch Farm

Experience cheese making the traditional Swiss way, from hand-milking, using a copper cauldron over a fire, to cheese storage. Taste pasture-fed cheese or take a tour to learn more about the cheese-making process (10:00 daily, via booking). Other activities include collecting eggs, hand milking and feeding the calves or having a cheese platter while taking in farm-life.

Blueberry Farm Cafè

Blueberry Heights Farm Café is a charming, family-friendly spot nestled in the heart of Magoebaskloof. Situated on a working organic farm, the café offers fresh, seasonal dishes, excellent coffee, and signature desserts. Guests can enjoy meals on a cozy deck overlooking Stanford Lake, with indoor and outdoor play areas for children. During summer visitors can pick their own blueberries.

Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours

Go on a journey into a previously inaccessible realm of nature, as you traverse the upper level of indigenous forest and ancient mountain cliffs, overlooking the spectacular Groot Letaba River gorge. The tour includes awe-inspiring slides and platform viewpoints over three giant waterfalls, each tumbling up to 20 metres into the sparkling river below. Relax and absorb the tranquillity of your natural surroundings on each platform as trained guides detail interesting facts about the fauna, flora and ecology of the surrounding environment.
